What types of activities qualify as service?
- Non-paid academic internships with a service focus (SIS stipend policy)
- Practicum hours such as nursing, firefighter, counseling, EMT, many others
- Student teaching hours spent teaching at a Title 1 institutions or student teachers teaching Special Education, ESL/Bilingual Education, or Math and Science Education
- Academic and co-curricular service learning
- Any community service in the areas of education, the environment, human services, public safety, and community development
- Federal or state funded community service work study positions with a service focus (the only eligible paid positions)
- Most volunteer work including mentoring, tutoring, stream restoration, volunteer recruitment, etc.
- Any service done for a non-profit organization or government agency whose mission is to serve their community
NOTE: All site supervisors must be professional staff such as teachers, administrators, advisors, volunteer directors, faculty, service learning center directors, assistant directors of a non-profit organization, etc. Under no circumstances should a student be a site supervisor for an SIS member such as a President of a Club or Greek Organization being a site supervisor for its club or Greek members.
What types of activities do not qualify as service?
- Any internship or practicum that is paid (SIS stipend policy)
- Any service that is done with a for-profit organization
- Any service completed at a site that does not provide liability or similar insurance for its volunteers
- Any service that is purely done on-campus and does not help the community in any way
- Any work study student that does not have a community service work study position as defined by the college/university financial aid office
- Any international service
- Any service done outside the SIS program's participating states and the US Territories of Guam, American Samoa, and Saipan (NCMI) (although exceptions have been made for service done in disasters zones such as in Mississippi or New Orleans)
